Castlewellan (in Irish: Caisleán Uidhilín, ie Uidhilín’s Castle) is a large village in County Down, Northern Ireland, situated beside Castlewellan Lake and Slievenaslat mountain, 16 miles (25 km) south west of Downpatrick. It lies between the Mourne Mountains and Slieve Croob. It had a population of 2,392 people in the 2001 Census. It is located in the Down District Council area. Castlewellan has a wide main street which runs through two main squares lined with chestnut trees. The town was designed by a French architect for the Annesley family (at that time owners of what is now Castlewellan Forest Park) and is unique within Ireland due to its tree lined squares both in the old town (upper square) and new town (lower square) as well as its very wide main street. The old market house in the upper square was built in 1764 and now houses the public library.[1] the town contains many buildings of interest including St. Pauls Church of Ireland church, St. Malachys RC church, the Grange Courtyard and Castlewellan Castle.

1. MATTHEW2 LOGAN (SAMUEL1) was born 1829 in County Down, Northern Ireland, and died 25 Mar 1911 in Toronto, Ontario. He married ELIZABETH COUGHLIN 19 Nov 1855 in Thurles, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, daughter of JOHN COUGHLIN and ELIZABETH. She was born 1828 in Newtown, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, and died 22 Nov 1905 in Toronto, Ontario.Notes for M ATTHEW LOGAN:Early History of Law Enforcement in Hamilton - Story relates to Matthew Logan 1875........ It was during his (Matthew Logan) regime that the Young murder occured. The Young brothers waylaid a farmer on the mountain, between Hamilton and Caledonia one night and robbed and then murdered him with a club. The youngs were arrested in this city and taken to Caledonia where they were tried and sentenced to death. They escaped from jail by murderously assaulting the turnkey, and were in hiding in a barn some distance south of the city, with two young women named Barber, daughters of a neighbouring farmer. The local constables were afraid to tackle them as they were armed, and announced that they would not be taken alive. A Hamilton policeman names James McFeigan, afterwards Chief of Police at Galt, was out in the country on a visit and located the men. He came into the city and informed Chief Logan, and a possee was at once ordered out to make the arrest. It was composed of Chief Logan, Sergeant Major McMenemy, Detectives Rousseaux and McPherson, Constables Donald Campbell, Keenan, Robinson, James McFiegan, David Wark, Joseph Prentice, Peter Ferris and Leslie Wright. They drove out to the place and surrounded the barn and then waited until daylight. The men were found hiding in a hay-mow and they resisted. Sergeant Major McMenemy shot James William Young through the wrist, and then the murders subsided. John Young was hung and James was later pardoned. The Hamilton Force was handsomely rewarded for the capture. Subsequently, Logan was made deputy warden of the Central prison, and Alexander McMenemy succeeded him in the fall of 1876. (Offlay) Baronies MacCoghlan's GARRYCASTLE - The largest barony in the King's County, containing parishes of Clonmacaois, Gallen, Lusmagh, Lemonaghan, Reynagh, Tisarin, and Killegally otherwise Wheery, also the towns of Banagher, Ferbane, Shannonbridge, Cloghan, and Shannonharbour, bounded by Westmeath on N., by Tipperary on S.W., and by Galway on W. as separated by the Shannon, which bounds its N. and N.W. border. The Little Brosna and Grand Canal traverses the interior, as does partly the railway from Clara via Ferbane and Belmount-which latter place is celebrated for one of the largest corn mills in Ireland, owned by James and Thomas Perry. This mill was in 1879.80 renovated and modern machinery replaced in it, the building having been destroyed by fire in 1879. The roofless baronial castle, formerly of the MacCoghlans, in the near vicinity of the new important Distillery, is seen from the Birr road, presenting a large gap in the thick walls, resembling an outline map of Ireland. The barony has the pre-eminence of possessing the most elaborate Whiskey Distillery in the country. County Offaly (King's county) The barony of Garrycastle, under the old name of Delvin-Ethra or Delvin MacCoghlan, was the inheritance of the MacCoghlan family. A family of English origin who have had a long association with Banagher was that of Armstrong. Coming over in 1657, they acquired a few years afterwards the very extensive MacCoghlan territory of a Cromwellian grantee, one Gregory Clements, who was dispossessed and executed in 1660 as a regicide. Claremont in Garrycastle, Belle Ivor between Banagher and Cloghan, and Gallen Priory of Ferbane were once Armstrong mansions. The Armstrongs were usually more liberal than the generation in which they lived and espoused the cause of Catholic emancipation in the early years of the last century in spite of the hostility of their class. The area that the village of Shannon Harbour was built in is known as the townland of Clononeybeg or in Gaelic 'Cluain Uaine Beag' which roughly translated means the small enclosed meadow area of the intended for deputy) one. This is a direct link to Clononey Castle, the 15th century stronghold of the MacCoghlan Clann which is situated a little over a mile from the village. This castle which is in good condition was one of nine that the MacCoghlans owned and second only to their main castle at Garrycastle outside Banagher which is now sadly no longer standing. A cousin of Anne Boleyn is buried in the castle yard. Clononey Castle Until 1600 most of west Offaly formed the "tuath" or territory of Delvin, the land of the Mac Coughlans.
The Mac Coughlans were renowned castle builders having castles at Cloghan, Banagher, Raghra (near Shannonbridge), Coole (near Ferbane), and Kilcogan (near Ferbane) and at another dozen cities. Among the finest of these is the lofty castle of Clononey. Built on a limestone outcrop and rising fifty feet it dominates the surrounding landscape. Just a few yards from the main entrance to the castle lies a large limestone slab which bears an inscription telling us that it was the tombstone of Elizabeth & Mary Bullyn who were relations of Anne Boleyn, one of the wives of Henry the VIII of England.
