Various stages of the old Baltimore House Hotel

Chippawa, Ontario

The Baltimore House Hotel was located on the northwest corner of Macklem Street and Portage Road in Chippawa.

Samuel Flommerfelt, born in Ontario in 1814, died December 1, 1873 in Chippawa, ON.  His death certificate tells us that he was a hotelkeeper in Chippawa.  He died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 59.  His wife's maiden name was Lavina Cook and they were the  parents of eight children:  John, Samuel, William, Emmeline, Catherine, Henrietta, Jane and Frances.

John Flommerfelt - Innkeeper (1871 Ontario Census - Chippawa, Welland Co.)

William Flommerfelt - Innkeeper (1881 Ontario Census - Chippawa).  He first married Elizabeth Beagan and had two children:  Margaret M. and William.  Sometime after  Elizabeth died in 1873,  William married Alice Mildred and they had 6 children:  Thomas Edward, Henry, George, Cyrus, Samuel, Florence.  One son, Thomas Edward Flommerfelt was a Hotelkeeper in Chippawa, ON and married Harriet L. Boore, my great grandmother's sister.  This great grandmother's name was Sarah Boore who married my great grandfather, William Silas Forsyth.  William Silas' father, Silas Sayers Forsyth was married to Henrietta Flommerfelt, mentioned below.  His son,  Dr. Thomas Edward Flommerfelt was a physician in Chippawa and became Chief Surgeon at Toronto's Western Hospital.  His son, Thomas Cloy Flommerfelt was a banker in Toronto.  William's son, Cyrus, according to the 1901 Ontario Census was a piano maker.  In the 1911 Census his occupation is noted as electrician, residence was 28 Allen St., Chippawa.  His wife, Daisy, was born in the USA and immigrated to Canada in 1903 along with their son, Cyrus S. who was 8 years old at the time.  They had another son, William, who was born in Chippawa in 1908.  Mrs. C. Flommerfelt, probably Cyrus Jr.'s wife, was proprietor of the Indian Village Cabins in Chippawa.

Catherine Flommerfelt - Married Michael House, Tavern Keeper in Willoughby.  In 1892 they immigrated to Baltimore, MD.  In 1920 they are living at 457 Cumberland St., Baltimore, MD.  Michael was then 72 years old, Catherine, 65.  Michael House was a proprietor of a hotel of which name I was unable to make out in Census.  Their son, Samuel W. House was Deputy Marshall in Baltimore, MD. in 1920.  He was 42 years old and a widower. Their other son, Clifford, lived two doors away from his brother, Samuel.  Clifford was a bookkeeper for a Wholesale Dry Goods company.

Samuel Flommerfelt married Mary McElwee

Emmeline married James Singer

Henrietta married Silas Sayers Forsyth.  They were my gr great grandparents.  In 1871 Silas Forsyth was an Innkeeper in Chippawa.  He was 24 years old in 1871.  They had two children, Fanny and William.  William was my great grandfather.   Silas and Henrietta are buried at Baltimore Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.  By 1881 they had moved to Baltimore, MD where Silas, at age 32 was a jeweler.  Silas Sayers Forsyth's father, William Forsyth, built the Pavilion Hotel in 1823 on the 400 acres of property he owned at Niagara Fall's right down to Table Rock.  It was the largest and most well known hotel of its kind in the Niagara region.

The front part of this building, facing Portage Road, was constructed around 1816 by John Kirkpatrick who used it as a general store.  Over the years various additions were made to the structure and around 1900 it was converted into the Baltimore Hotel.  In later years it was a variety store, a boarding house and a clothing shop.  In 1979 extensive renovations were made and the building took on a new look and a new role as a restaurant currently called The Boat House.  (Sherman Zavitz collection)
